Wax Carving and Casting Rings

SquarePeg Studios runs a number of specialist jewellery techniques workshops every year.

Stone Setting Course.  Previous Jewellery Experience and Soldering skills are  essential.
Date: Saturday 1 November, Saturday 15 November and Saturday 22 November, 2014. 10am to 3pm.

The Stone Setting Course is aimed at makers with existing jewellery skills who want to gain additional expertise to allow them to make more complicated rings and settings.  This is especially useful when undertaking commission work.
This 15 hour stone setting course will be taught over 3 Saturdays, and is taught by Majella Beck, an experienced teacher and contemporary jeweller.
During the course students will learn how to make the following settings: basic bezel settings, tube settings, flush settings (gypsy settings) and tension setting (for stones with a hardness of 8-10). Students will also have an opportunity to make their own setting.

There will be a $15 materials fee for stones and metal.

The Intensive Torch – Soldering – Previous soldering experience is essential

Always wondered how to do multiple solder joins using just hard solder?  It is possible and in this one day intensive Majella Beck will share her soldering expertise, tips and tricks to allow you to get much more out of your soldering. Be able to recognise colours and temperatures when annealing and soldering. Learn how to choose the right flame for the right job.

Wax Carving and Casting Workshop – No Previous Jewellery experience required

In this two-day workshop students will be introduced to a variety of wax working techniques, including carving and moldable wax forming. On day one students will have the opportunity to experiment with different types of wax and make 2 wax rings that will be cast by a commercial caster. On day two students will clean up the castings and also learn additional tips and tricks for making wax models.
All wax materials are included in the cost of the workshop. There is a casting fee of approximately $20 – $50 per ring (depending on the weight and cost of the metal used).

An introduction to silicone moulds and casting – No jewellery skills necessary

Cost: $165 inc GST
Learn how to make simple silicone moulds that can be used for making models in wax, silicone and other materials.  Brenda Factor uses silicone extensively in her art practice and will demonstrate ways to make quick and easy moulds for casting multiples.

 

Liquid Enamel Weekend Workshop – No jewellery skills necessary

The liquid enamel courses is aimed at anyone interested in working with a different type of enamel, as a way of adding both colour and texture to copper and steel. Liquid enamel can be used in a range of ways – painted, dripped, sgraffitto, layered and ground back, textured and more. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to experiment with all these techniques, using liquid enamel by itself and in conjunction with transparent enamels and other materials. Linda Blair is a tenant at SquarePeg, and is a contemporary jeweller who uses liquid enamel extensively in her practice.

Hand Colouring Anodised Aluminium -No Previous Jewellery experience required

Using pre-anodised aluminium sheet Brenda Factor will teach you how to colour anodised aluminium using dyes, inks, stamps and markers. This technique can be used safely at home – no nasty anodising chemicals or expensive set-up needed. This is ideal for those makers who want to incorporate colour in their jewellery. Students will have the opportunity to experiment using dip dying, overdying and stamping and students will complete a range of samples that can be incorporated into jewellery at a later date. Brenda recently undertook a workshop with Lindsey Mann  in the UK and is keen to share her new found techniques. No jewellery skills are required.

Conditions of Registration

  1. The course fees must be paid in full on enrolment and are non-refundable.
  2. Notwithtanding section 1, the course fees may be refundable in the event that a course is cancelled or oversubscribed.
  3. We may cancel a course in the event that there are insufficient number of students subscribed to the course.
  4. It is the responsibility of the student to attend each class in the course and no refund, or provision of any additional classes, is available for non-attendance of all or part of the course.

How to get the most out of your torch, be able to recognise colours and temperatures when annealing, soldering or fusing.  Learn how to choose the right flame for the right job. This will lead into a session on fusing and reticulation of metals.

In this workshop Majella Beck will guide you through the much neglected art of making brooch backs which are not only functional but also look good.  Find out how to make a double brooch back for larger pieces.

Chain Making

Chain making does not have to be time consuming, laborious and something to be avoided. Once again sharing tips and tricks on how to make chain using an easy solder technique.
